Airy Acres Vineyard is a family-owned winery located in Interlaken NY. The land has been in the family since 1918, with grapegrowing starting in 2015.
Owner Fred inherited the farm from his mother Betty in 2014. It is the farm that both he and Betty grew up on. Both Fred’s parent’s ancestors lived in the Interlaken area since the early 1800s, as farmers and business leaders. Betty’s family moved there (from the farmhouse next door) in 1918, at age 5. Betty’s father, Fred Freestone, was very involved in the agricultural needs of the community, a member and director of the Wheeler National Bank of Interlaken, a Past Master of New York State Grange, and on numerous statewide committees serving the greater public. Fred’s father, Myron W. Bassette Jr., grew up in Interlaken, the great-great grandson of Lemuel Bassette who moved to the Interlaken area from Connecticut in 1810. Myron was the one who built the grass airstrip on the property in 1957, calling it Airy Acres Airport, and it is where the vineyard gets its name. Fred’s grandfather, Myron W. Bassette Sr. served the Wheeler National Bank from 1910 until his death in 1961. He was also involved in the Chamber of Commerce and the War efforts for both World Wars. He assisted in the formation of the Interlaken Historical Society, as well as other community organizations.
The family started planting vines in 2015, first with Riesling and Gewürztraminer. 21 acres as of 2024, the vineyard has 8 different varietals; Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Rkatsiteli, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Lemberger, and Saperavi. For the first few years fruit was sold to local wineries, but starting in 2020 the first vintage of wine was made. Airy Acres makes wine from all 8 grapes grown on the estate.
Renovations on the 1840s farmhouse were completed the summer of 2024. Tastings are available inside seated and outside on the deck overlooking the vineyard, during open hours.
Airy Acres strives to provide high-quality fruit, always harvested at optimum ripeness, and enjoy showing the public how our passion for viticulture led to the creation of beautiful wines.
